Who We Are
255 Years of Support, Connection & British Tradition
Founded in 1770, St. George’s Society of New York (SGSNY) is one of New York City’s oldest charitable organizations and social societies. For over two and a half centuries, we’ve offered care and comfort to New Yorkers of British and Commonwealth heritage when it’s needed most.
Through our charitable programs and member events, we continue a proud legacy of supporting those in need, while celebrating British culture in New York City.
What We Do
OUR CHARITABLE PROGRAMS
SGSNY provides life-changing assistance to New Yorkers with British and Commonwealth ties through three core programs:
Scholarship Program – Providing financial assistance to final-year college students.
Beneficiary Program – Offering rent support and essential aid to senior citizens, helping them live with dignity and stability.
Family Support Fund – Assisting families impacted by pediatric cancer in accessing life-saving treatment in New York City.
Our mission is rooted in community support and cultural connection, made possible by a dedicated network of members, donors, and partners.
Who Makes It Possible?
OUR MEMBERS
Behind every act of generosity is a passionate group of members, individuals and organizations who believe in giving back and staying connected to their British roots. Many of our members are British expatriates, others are proud Anglophiles, but all are here to make a positive impact.
From cultural events and mixers to fundraising galas, our gatherings are an opportunity to connect and support what matters. Learn more about members.
Our History
Serving New Yorkers with British and Commonwealth Ties Since 1770
Founded on St. George’s Day in 1770, SGSNY predates the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. St. George’s Society of New York has been part of this city’s story from the very beginning. We’re the second-oldest charitable organization in NYC, and while the skyline has changed, our purpose has stayed the same.
In our early years, SGSNY provided essential aid such as:
Delivering coal or firewood vouchers during harsh New York winters
Covering the return ship passage to the UK via the White Star Line
Providing free hospital beds at St. Luke’s Hospital
Offering employment assistance during The Great Depression
Securing burial plots for British subjects in need.
Today, we continue that tradition while evolving to meet modern needs such as offering rent support, educational funding, and emergency aid for families in medical crisis.
Our Financials
St. George’s Society of New York is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.
