How did you get involved with SGSNY?
I heard about SGSNY before I even arrived in NYC, so it felt like a natural organization to join - to meet others with similar backgrounds and learn about life on the East Coast. The social aspect of the events and the inspiring charitable work really stood out for me too.
What’s your favorite part of being an SGSNY member?
There are honestly too many to list! The big events are always great fun and a highlight from a fundraising perspective. The recent Casino Royale Night was a standout, partly because it was something new and different (though nothing can really replace the Bash!). I’ve also enjoyed volunteering, especially pre-Covid at St Thomas. I even managed to get my teenage son to join me, so he could gain some insight into the lives of those in our community who aren’t as fortunate. Serving on the SGSNY Board for three years was another meaningful experience - it gave me a real appreciation for the wide range of activities the organization supports and the dedication of everyone involved in making it all happen!
How has being part of SGSNY helped you as a newer New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)?
It’s really simple - the sense of community. SGSNY offers an immediate and welcoming group of like-minded people. It’s a mix of fellow expats who’ve gone through the same life-changing move to NYC, and American members who genuinely enjoy the camaraderie and spirit of the group.
What’s your favorite place in NYC? Favorite food or meal you’ve had since moving here?
As you know, I love to run and whenever I’ve had the chance to run in Central Park, it’s been a great experience. It’s amazing to escape the craziness of the city while still being surrounded by the diversity that makes NYC so special, thanks to all the residents and visitors in the park. As for food…we could be here all day!
Tell us about your recent fundraising experience.
I ran three half-marathons over just six weeks: the first in London, the second in Nashville, and the third in Rye, NY. I do enjoy running, but training through the winter definitely isn’t fun - and let’s be honest, running 13.1 miles (three times!) isn’t quite as easy as perhaps it used to be!
What really kept me going was the fundraising aspect. It highlighted just how generous and supportive my community is. The encouragement from SO many people made all the difference, so a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated and cheered me on—I honestly don’t think I would’ve finished without you!
