Mary Lamasney’s Retirement: 17 Years of Supporting Seniors at SGSNY

SGSNY social workers Mary Lamasney and Julie Rosenberg supporting seniors in New York City

This July, St. George’s Society of New York (SGSNY) bids a heartfelt farewell to Mary Lamasney, our dedicated Social Worker, as she officially retires after 17 years of incredible service.

Since joining SGSNY in 2008, Mary has been an integral part of our Beneficiary Program, helping more than 500 seniors across New York City access the essential services they need to live with security, independence, and dignity.

Among her many contributions, Mary launched beloved social programs like the annual Wendy Shadwell Tea and the Shadwell Buddies, both of which have become treasured opportunities for seniors to connect, celebrate, and be seen. Her dedication was recognized in 2021 when she was named one of Crain’s New York Business's Notables in Nonprofits & Philanthropy.

But beyond her professional achievements, it’s Mary’s empathy that truly sets her apart. Her ability to build trust with our seniors and to share their stories with warmth and compassion has touched many in the SGSNY community and reminded us why nonprofit work matters so much.

Julie Rosenberg, a longtime colleague and friend, reflected on her time working alongside Mary:

I first met Mary when I worked with seniors facing eviction in housing court, and she quickly earned my respect. Over nearly 13 years of working together, I’ve witnessed her compassion, kindness, sharp wit, and deep commitment to St. George’s.Throughout her career, she’s helped stabilize the lives of hundreds of low-income seniors, ensuring they could remain safe and secure in their homes. ‘Miss Mary,’ as so many Beneficiaries affectionately call her, will be deeply missed, not only by those she supported, but by me, her biggest fan. Being part of this 255-year-old organization with Mary has been the most rewarding and meaningful chapter of my career.

Mary stepped down from her full-time role in October 2021 but continued supporting SGSNY part-time. As she now fully retires, we offer our deepest gratitude for everything she has given to our team, our members, and the many lives she has touched within the British and Commonwealth community in New York. We wish her a long, healthy, and fulfilling retirement ahead.
