Meet Philip Robertson
Originally from the UK, Philip Robertson moved to New York in 1999 and has spent approximately 30 years in strategic communications, working across Europe and the U.S. in both agency and in-house roles. Now a partner at Impact Partners, he advises family offices, VC/PE firms, and founders. A former Guinness World Records judge and founder of a photography studio, he’s traveled extensively across North America. Philip lives in NYC and enjoys music (Britrock/indie/alternative but gave up the associated haircut), football (Southampton/Dundee United), cricket, photography, and gardening.
How did you get involved with SGSNY?
Back in June 2001, I attended a British General Election event in New York and walked away with a BBC coffee mug—which, incredibly, I still use today. That evening, St. George’s Society was represented, though I didn’t yet appreciate the full extent of the organization’s mission. At the time, I was relatively new to the U.S. and unaware of the vital work SGSNY does through its Family Support Fund, Scholarship Program, and Beneficiary Network. Over two decades later, I rediscovered the Society by chance—and it felt like I’d found my tribe.
What’s your favorite part of being an SGSNY member?
New York is a city of extraordinary diversity, and there’s something uniquely grounding about connecting with people who share a cultural shorthand—those moments of British perspective that spark conversation or laughter over the differences and similarities between the UK and the U.S. Beyond that, the Society’s events are really enjoyable, and great opportunities to hear the inspiring stories of members who have been part of the team that collect families from airports to help them receive treatment or the reaction of scholars - in short; learning how the organization has quietly and effectively changed lives.
How has being part of SGSNY helped you as a newer New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)?
It’s rare to find a community that both reflects your roots and broadens your outlook. Through SGSNY, I’ve met people who share elements of my upbringing, which has helped forge new friendships and expand my network professionally. There’s some truth to the saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” It wasn’t until I attended my first AGM that I realized how much the Society had to offer. Since then, I’ve been involved in numerous events—each one reinforcing how this historic organization continues to stay relevant and meaningful, with strong in-person events that make connecting with people so much better.
What’s your favorite place in NYC? Favorite food or meal you’ve had since moving here?
There's nothing quite like stepping into the warm, humid air of the New York Botanical Garden conservatory when it’s bitterly cold during a New York City winter. It’s one of my favorite escapes in the city. As for food—introducing Americans to fish and chips, a proper curry, or a classic Sunday roast (especially one with proper pork crackling, like I had at Soho House years ago) is always a joy. Good food, shared stories, and cross-cultural laughter—very much in the spirit of SGSNY.
