Meet Rida Sohail

Rida was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to New York City in 2023 for graduate school. She earned her master’s degree in Computer Science from Hunter College, and has a background in data science and analytics. Rida’s technology career has spanned both the public and private sectors, where she has used data to solve complex business, operational, and real-world problems.

Since moving to New York, Rida has especially valued opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds, build a sense of community, and connect with people through organizations like St. George’s Society.

  1. How did you get involved with SGSNY?

I first learned about SGSNY through a friend who invited me to an event. I initially went thinking it would be a one-time opportunity to meet new people, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the sense of community. One thing led to another, and the rest is history. I eventually became a member!

  2. What’s your favorite part of being an SGSNY member?

SGSNY offers so much, including a strong sense of community and the chance to connect with people from different backgrounds through its events and programs. Beyond that, I admire SGSNY's Scholarship Program most. Education has played an important role in my journey, and I know how access to education, along with a little financial support and encouragement, can open doors. Having grown up in Pakistan and later graduating from CUNY, I'm especially happy to be part of the community, knowing that SGSNY helps create those opportunities for students through its scholarship program.

  3. How has being part of SGSNY helped you as a newer New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)?

Tremendously! Through SGSNY, I've met people from so many different walks of life and backgrounds. I've made genuine friendships, received valuable professional advice, and met people I probably never would have crossed paths with otherwise. More than anything, it's helped me build a sense of community here and made New York feel a little smaller and more like home.

  4. What’s your favorite place in NYC? What's your favorite food or meal you’ve had since moving here?

My favorite place in NYC is the West Side Highway. I love running along the water because it clears my mind, and the views are amazing.

For food, Tziki in Chelsea has great Greek cuisine, Taco Mahal is one of my favorites for South Asian-inspired dishes, and Birria LES is my go-to for Mexican food, with so many locations around Manhattan, including the Lower East Side, East Village, and Chelsea. One of my favorite things about New York is that there is always somewhere new to try.
