St George’s Society Volunteers at Morningside Park
On Saturday, October 3, SGSNY members came together for our second year running to volunteer at Morningside Park. We joined Friends of Morningside Park for the morning to help restore and care for one of Harlem’s much-loved green spaces.
From 9:00 to 11:00 AM, our volunteers got stuck in clearing hedgerows and removing the weeds that had grown throughout the summer. Along the way we also gained some useful tips on identifying which plants were weeds, which ones could stay and how to avoid poison ivy - the key of which is to remember: “Leaves of three, let it be!”
The morning brought together a wonderful mix of SGSNY members, from those who have been part of the Society for many years to some of our newest members. In fact, one member had only joined the Society as a Young Professional the day before - so shout-out to George for getting stuck in straight away.
After two hours of work, we headed to a nearby brunch spot to celebrate our efforts and enjoy some well-earned food and conversation. We had originally had the pub in mind, but discovered that we were a little too early for opening time…so brunch it was!
It was a fantastic morning and a great example of what makes the SGSNY community so special: an opportunity to meet fellow members, connect in a relaxed setting, and give something back to the city we call home.
We’re grateful to Friends of Morningside Park for welcoming us back again and for the work they do year-round to protect and restore this beautiful natural space.
If you would like to join us for our next volunteering activity, you can sign up now! We’re going to be handing out Thanksgiving pies with St Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, find out more details here.
