Meet Colette Carruthers

Originally from Glasgow, Colette moved to New York after a decade in London and now advises FTSE 500 companies. She works with financial institutions globally on data and AI strategy and front-office transformation.

A former field hockey player, she now splits her time between training for Hyrox and walking her puppy, who generally has the final say on pace and direction. Based in NYC, Colette enjoys watching rugby, seeking out a proper pub, and is quietly working her way through all 50 U.S. states.

  1. How did you get involved with SGSNY?

When I first arrived in New York, I knew only one or two people. A friend invited me to a St. George’s Society event at The Liberty, and it was a welcome slice of home in an otherwise unfamiliar city. I went along to a few events in that first year, enjoying the chance to meet people and settle in.

It wasn’t until I attended an AGM a few years later that I fully understood the scale of the Society’s work and its impact on the local community. Since then, I’ve become more involved and enjoy both the social side and the opportunity to give back, I’m looking forward to the upcoming volunteering day on Governors Island and the World Cup watch parties.

  2. What’s your favorite part of being an SGSNY member?

Being part of SGSNY has introduced me to a group of people I likely wouldn’t have met otherwise, many of whom have become good friends along the way. Beyond the people, I’ve particularly enjoyed the range of events the Society puts on. There’s always something going on, and usually a good excuse to try somewhere new. It’s also broadened my network in a way that’s felt both natural and genuinely useful, without ever feeling overly transactional. And, perhaps just as importantly, it’s provided a reliable place to despair over rugby and football results.

  3. How has being part of SGSNY helped you as a newer New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)?

Personally, I’ve met people through SGSNY who’ve become some of my closest friends in the city. There’s something quite enjoyable about turning up to an event and not knowing who you might meet, and I’ve really valued the chance to connect with other Brits I wouldn’t typically cross paths with day to day.

  4. What’s your favorite place in NYC? Favorite food or meal you’ve had since moving here?

There’s almost too much to choose from, but I’ve made it something of a mission to try most of the Sunday roasts in the city, and I’ve enjoyed introducing American friends to the tradition along the way. It’s been a mixed bag, but a few have come surprisingly close to the real thing.

As for a favorite spot, it’s hard to beat Central Park. It’s become something of a regular escape, whether for a long walk, a bit of people-watching, or just a moment of quiet that’s otherwise hard to come by in the city. There’s always something new to notice, which makes it feel different every time.
