Volunteer with SGSNY at Billion Oyster Project
SGSNY Members are welcome to join us this spring for a hands-on day of volunteering with the Billion Oyster Project on Governors Island!
This is an exciting opportunity to make a direct impact on the restoration of the Harbor’s oyster population while getting a little messy in the process!
We will spend the morning helping BOP to restore NYC’s harbor by cleaning shell substrate, fabricating reef balls, or maintaining the shell pile for the busy season ahead.
Shell cleaning involves washing, shaking, and loading shells that will later be seeded with juvenile oysters. Reef ball fabrication includes mixing eco-concrete and filling molds to create new reef structures. You may also assist with shell pile maintenance by clearing debris and organizing materials and equipment. Every task is crucial to the project’s success!
Timeline for the day:
The day will begin at 9:15AM to travel across to Governors Island.
Upon arrival we will get the chance to hear about the history of the oysters in the harbor and learn why oysters are so important to our marine ecosystem. Then we will get stuck into some volunteering activities, break for lunch and finish up our jobs for the day!
We will be done by 2:00PM to get the 2:15pm ferry back to Manhattan.
This event is for SGSNY members only. Space is limited, so please RSVP today.
