About the Event

We are pleased to invite SGSNY members and friends to join us for a virtual talk with Historian Helen Castor in conversation with Board Director Brad Simmons as she explores the dramatic lives of Richard II and Henry IV, the cousins whose rivalry reshaped the English crown and inspired some of Shakespeare’s most celebrated history plays.

Drawing on her extensive research, Helen will discuss how Richard II and Henry Bolingbroke, born just months apart, grew into striking opposites. Richard, the white hart, whose fragile kingship evolved into tyranny, and Henry, the eagle, a chivalric leader whose challenge to Richard changed the course of English history. Together, their story reveals the high stakes of power, legitimacy, and resistance in medieval England.

This event will feature a 45-minute talk and a 15-minute Q&A session at the end.

Attendance to this event is free and open to both members and non-members.
