The English Ball is St. George’s Society of New York’s annual black-tie gala recognizing distinguished members of the Anglo-American and Commonwealth communities and celebrating SGSNY’s charitable mission to provide critical support services in our local community.
With rare exceptions including 2020, St. George’s Society of New York (SGSNY) has held its English Ball every year since its founding in 1770. A premier social event in New York City, the event welcomes members, corporate leaders and honored guests to enjoy an evening of dining, dancing and raising funds to support SGSNY’s charitable initiatives and improve the quality of life for New Yorkers. This important fundraising gala helps to sustain and expand SGSNY’s charitable initiatives and is SGSNY's largest source of funding for our charitable programs serving seniors at risk of homelessness, CUNY students in their final year and families affected by pediatric cancer traveling to New York for treatment.
Previous honorees include Sir Rocco Forte (Rocco Forte Hotels, 2021), Paula Kerr-Jarrett(Barnett Ltd., 2021), Greg Case (Aon, 2020) , Bob Dudley (BP, 2019), Tim Marlow (Royal Academy of Arts, 2019), Dan Glaser (Marsh & McLennan, 2018), James G. Goren (Goren Brothers, 2015), Angela Ahrendts DBE (Burberry, 2011), Vincent HoSang (Caribbean Food Delights, 2010) and Lord Browne of Madingley (BP, 2005).
Fund-A-Scholar
During the evening, we host the "Fund-A-Scholar" pledge drive, which is the primary source of funding for SGSNY's Scholarship Program. The program provides critical financial aid and enrichment opportunities to students facing financial hardship in their final year of study at CUNY universities across all five New York City boroughs.
Over $1 million awarded to serve 444 students.
SGSNY scholars have a 98% graduation rate (compared to CUNY’s 56%)
71% of SGSNY scholars are women
SGSNY scholars' ages range from 20 - 51 years old
