Member Spotlight: Euan Wilson
Meet Euan Wilson
Born in the UK to British parents but raised outside of Atlanta, GA, Euan came to New York in 2014 to work in Financial Advisory at Merrill Lynch, where he still practices today. Actively seeking to avoid the finance bro stereotype, he refuses to wear “The Vest” and waits for people to get off the subway before entering said subway. He works with individuals and families planning for today, tomorrow, and decades from now. He emphasizes charitable and tax efficiency as keystones of financial planning, and usually works with people in the corporate, startup, and legal worlds, but with plenty of folks walking their own unique paths. He remains fascinated with how music changed over the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and has special fondness for Rock, New Wave, and Alternative. He will occasionally make time to watch a Tennis Grand Slam, the NBA playoffs, and actively seeks out chances to work outdoors among the trees. His wife would describe him as a “tough crowd” when it comes to film and television, he prefers the term “celebrates excellence in the arts”.
How did you get involved with SGSNY?
It was an active search. My wife and I both arrived separately in NYC the same year, 2014, yet recently I realized she knew about 10 times the people I did. Part of that is she’s the coolest person I know, but another part is she actively seeks out her people. So I asked myself, who are mine? Brits. So I typed in “British charity, New York City HQ” and up comes St. George’s. I looked over the Society’s charitable endeavors: Seniors at Risk of Poverty, Commonwealth Scholarships, and my personal favorite, Housing Aid for Families of Children in NYC Hospitals, and felt I could happily support an organization that works for such things.
What’s your favorite part of being an SGSNY member?
People and shovels. Not even kidding, shovels. The Society does a wonderful job of organizing worthwhile volunteer events, and my favorites are the Park Clean-Ups. We did Morningside Park in 2025, and pulling weeds in the sunshine with other kind people is just balm for the soul. Last month we did a clean-up on one of the bridge arches in Central Park, and again, you come away from it covered in dirt but feeling great. We live in an incredible city, but it really does take all of us to keep it that way. The chance to give back with my time and put my gardening and shoveling experience to good use is genuinely rewarding. The Society also got me to do the 5 Borough Cycling ride this year to raise a bit of money (shout out to my fellow riders), and I never would’ve cycled 40 miles without that impetus. Beyond glad that I did.
How has being part of SGSNY helped you as a newer New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)?
I’m a talkative introvert. It’s an odd combination, if I’m at a great event and feeling good, I’ll chat for ages. But getting me there in the first place, that’s the thing I knew I needed to work on and a wonderful organization like SGS keeps on serving up opportunities for me to go out there and meet some people. I do financial advisory work, helping families plan for important life decisions, and it's work I genuinely enjoy. But meaningful relationships don't happen sitting behind a desk. You've got to meet people, hear their stories, and participate in your community. SGS gets me out the door and into the action.
The World Cup watch parties deserve a mention, too. A brilliant atmosphere right up until England's tactical plan seemingly became 'let Messi have the ball for 40 minutes straight and hope for the best.' As football strategies go, it had room for improvement.
What’s your favorite place in NYC? Favorite food or meal you’ve had since moving here?
My wife and I have a 90-pound boxer, Arthur. He needs some space, so taking him for an extra long walk up and down Riverside Park is the best. We all love Central Park, but the chance to sit by the river and watch boats and ships going about their business is an ideal Sunday morning. Plus, he gets to munch on a stick and scoff at the Canada geese. Riverside Park, lovely place.
Food-wise? All I ever want is to go to Ocean Prime and have the Warm Butter Cake for dessert. It’s straight out of the soul of an English kitchen. And have you ever tried a Ne-bru-ni? Irn-Bru riff on the Negroni. I know we’re an English organization, but my mum’s the Anglo. Dad’s from Edinburgh. So I’ll represent Britain quite happily with a Roast, Yorkshire Pudding, and Cranachan.
