    2010 Annual President's Appeal

    November 2010

    Dear Friend,

Thanks to your continued support, each year the Society directly improves the lives of over 70 monthly beneficiaries.  These are British and Commonwealth persons in the tri-State area who could not survive without our help.  Not only does St. George’s help today, but we promise to help each beneficiary for life or until their situation improves.  We are also in the third year of our highly successful scholarship program at Lehman College, whereby we provide financial assistance to students from Commonwealth countries who otherwise would run out of funds and be unable to complete their degree work.  In addition to providing financial relief, St. George’s offers other forms of compassion, such as providing a resting place for British War Veterans and others and referring beneficiaries to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital.

St. George’s is special in its tradition both as a charity and a membership organization.  We continue to co-host our popular sports dinners, and will kick off this holiday season with a Captain’s Knock Rugby Legends Dinner.  We host many cultural events and last month staged our first-ever Anglo-American Cultural Awards gala, featuring a wonderful production of Stephen Sondheim’s Evening Primrose.  In December we shall also have the honor of hosting our Royal Patron, The Duke of Gloucester, who will meet with many of our Lehman scholars and present our first-ever Commonwealth Medal to a worthy Jamaican recipient at a reception for Society members and guests.  Our annual Christmas luncheon at the Yale Club shall conclude our year and we should all be proud that our Society continues to provide an exceptional opportunity to reinforce our British heritage through a rich array of events.

Annual dues cover only a small fraction of our expenses.  We must work hard to raise additional revenues through producing successful events and preserve our endowment.  We must do all we can to increase our annual revenues to further the Society’s good works.  Your participation in the President’s Appeal helps us to balance our budget and also sends a strong message to foundations and institutional funders that our charity truly begins at home.

Your gift will build on our 240 year history and support those in need.  It has been a great honor for me to serve as your President for the past two years, and I firmly believe that we have made great strides in expanding the outreach and mission of our beloved Society.  I know as well that I will leave the Society in strong and dedicated hands.  I ask you to contribute as generously as you are able and I thank you in advance for helping to ensure a bright future for our endeavors.

    Sincerely,

    Victor E. Stewart
    President

The Society is pleased to announce that Samantha J. Hamilton has accepted an offer to become its first full-time director of development and marketing, effective 13 October, 2010.

Ms. Hamilton, who is known as Sam, will report to the Executive Director, John Shannon, and work closely with the Development Committee, the Campaign for St. George and the Society's Advisory Council.

As development director, Sam's objectives are to advance the goals of the campaign, expand the membership, increase fundraising, obtain foundation grants and develop corporate sponsorship. Sam brings a remarkably appropriate combination of experience and background to the Society. British by birth, she moved to New York with her husband, also British, who works for a British financial services information company. She is a graduate of Oxford University (Mansfield College) which awarded her a BA in Hons Philosophy, Politics and Economics. After graduation, she worked at N.M. Rothschild, first in the information department, then in the investment banking division. In 2005 she moved to Asthma UK, also in London, where she was a major supporter officer, where her role was to identify, research and cultivate high net worth individuals to secure major gifts for the organization. She moved to New York in 2008 and worked (as a volunteer on a part-time basis) at ORBIS and the Michael J. Fox Foundation while studying for a Certificate in Fundraising at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

In September of this year her application for a work permit was granted. The Society feels fortunate to have secured her as an employee. Please be sure to introduce yourself and welcome Sam into the New York St. George's family.
