MISSION - Capital Campaign

The Objective:

The Development Campaign is to raise $5 million in gifts and pledges over five years to achieve three objectives:

  • - Hire at least one full-time social worker to care for more beneficiaries
  • - Increase funding to provide additional finances for beneficiaries
  • - Initiate an education/scholarship program to help young immigrants acquire an education and a career in the United States.
The Purpose:

Charitable expenditures are rising. In order to fulfill its historic mandate of aiding people in need, the Society must increase its resources. A successful Development Campaign will ensure that resources are available to support future charitable activities and social services.

The Society depends entirely on membership dues, annual giving, special events, and endowment income to pay for charity which accounts for 72% of annual expenditure. To produce more revenue, over the past decade the Society has successfully transformed the annual English Ball and developed the endowment. Today they are the major sources of income for St. George’s Society, but they cannot be expected to consistently produce greater revenue to meet increased demand for charity.

When the Society was founded 238 years ago, charity consisted of giving coupons for food, buckets of coal, old clothing, free medical treatment or finding jobs for the unemployed. Today the Society provides monthly stipends to enable beneficiaries to make ends meet, pay rent, buy medication and enhance their quality of life.

Progress:

Historically, the members of St. George’s Society have always stepped up and contributed generously to advance the Society. Fundraising at St. George’s is not new, although the scale of this campaign is unprecedented. The initial response has been most encouraging. By the end of 2006, the Society had received gifts and pledged totaling $1.3 million, including leadership pledges from Sir Dennis Weatherstone, KBE, and William R. Miller, OBE. The Society announced the public phase of the campaign at its Annual General Meeting held on 23 January 2007. Later in the year, St. George's received an extraordinary grant of $1 million from the Manton Foundation, thanks to longtime member Sir Edwin Manton (joined 1939) and Lady Manton. Thus, the Campaign has now reached almost half its goal.

Beginning in January 2007, Carol Chetrick, LCSW, joined the Society’s staff. By recruiting its first full-time social worker, to be styled the Manton Social Worker in honor of Sir Edwin and Lady Manton, the Society will greatly expand its capacity to provide professional services to its beneficiaries. Previously the Society relied solely on the services of a part-time social worker, Sandra Grassby. With added professional resources, the Society is now seeking more beneficiaries and expects to build up its caseload from 60-70 to 90-100 in the next few years.
