EVENTS - BritArts

British-born Manhattan resident Jim Dale, MBE identified the desirability of creating a meeting place in New York for fellow professional performers and theatre people from the UK permanently or temporarily resident in the city.

Acting on this idea, St. George’s Society of New York started the Arts Initiative in 2004 - now renamed as BritArts - as a channel for members of the British societies and performers to meet and mingle as well as to discover exciting new endeavors. Chaired by Theatrical Producer Margot Astrachan, the group builds on the cultural and historical values shared by the USA and Britain, which today are reflected in mutual interests, shared values and a common language.

Events are mostly held at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, 31 West 52nd Street, New York, New York, but please confirm the venue on our calendar or with the Society before attending events.

ANGLO-AMERICAN CULTURAL AWARDS

In 2010, the St. George’s Society instituted an annual award to recognize individuals who have rendered significant services in the US-UK cultural world.

Recipients must be either British or American professionals who have achieved the recognition of their peers for their contributions and achievements in their field of endeavor in our interconnected cultures.

The inaugural Anglo-American Cultural Awards took place on Monday 25 October, featuring a reading of Stephen Sondheim’s Evening Primrose starring Candice Bergen, Jessica Grove and Sean Palmer.  The performance was followed by a gala dinner on the 44th floor of the Hearst Tower honoring Glenda Bailey, Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar, and award-winning scenic/costume designer and director, Tony Walton. Grants were presented to Lauren Jennings (fashion design degree student) and Christine Jones (Tony Award-winning set designer). The event was hosted by Jim Dale, MBE, and the awards were presented by Angela Lansbury and Scottish actor Alan Cumming, OBE, who also provided the entertainment for the evening.
